Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
