New research indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
